My Soapbox Comment of the Day

There are so many people and organizations out there that are criticising animal agriculture. I was recently on Facebook and saw a post from a non-agriculture person. This guy said that if animal agriculture disappeared in our country, our economy wouldn't be negatively effected. Hey man, we're not out here doing this for nothin'! ;) Anyway, I found this interesting paragraph online that I wanted to share. I'll get off my soapbox now. :)

Nationally, animal agriculture created over $74 billion in earnings that resulted in over $400 billion in economic output in the United States. This means that animal agriculture and related industries generated $400 billion into the economy. Livestock and poultry production created 2.9 million jobs in the United States, according to the Animal Agriculture Economic Analysis Update, a report by Promar Internationl for the United Soybean Board (USB). To put the economic output in perspective, the automotive industry accounted for $344 billion in 2002, according to a report by the Center for Automotive Research.

  1. Amen! He'll think US agriculture isn't important when he starts buying, not only toys with lead from China, but how about lead infested meats too!?!

  2. Exactly! We heard a speaker the other night who showed an actual newspaper clipping. I don't remember it word for word, but it said something to the effect of: don't support slaughter houses, buy your meat at the grocery store where no animals are harmed. Seriously?! Geez!
